What is an Air Handling Unit? Working | Component-HVAC?

The full form of AHU is Air Handling Units.

Ahu is made of different sections known as, the mixing chamber, coil section, heater section, blower section, pre-filter section, and fine filter section. 

Definition Of AHU

The full form of AHU is Air Handling Unit (Ahu stands for Air Handling unit). An Air handling unit is a machine, which is used to regulate or handle or circulate air from different areas. This machine Air handling machine is a part of HVAC, (HVAC Stand for Heating ventilation, and air conditioning).

An Ahu is usually made of a Partition panel, which is filled with puff insulation to prevent cooling loss to the surrounding, SS sheets and GI sheets is usually used to make partition panel.

Ventilation System: –

Basically, in this type of ahu system, we don’t require any cooling in the area, and also a Humidity control system. So, we don’t need to consider Pre- and post-cooling, heater, or UV light section.

The size and Price of AHU depend on User requirements.

1. Motor

The motor is an important part of AHU, it is mounted in a Blower section of AHU. The motor is an electrical component that is used to rotate the blower in AHU. The Motor shaft is connected with the blower and balanced statically and dynamically by a specialist. The imbalance of the motor and blower causes heavy damage in AHU. Basically, flame-proof and non flame-proof motors are used in AHU. Somewhere we are also using EC fan. EC fan is Energy Efficient Device which is using in AHU. 

2. Blower

Blower

The blower is a rotatory part of an ahu. The function of a blower is to suck air from one chamber and press it to another chamber, or simply we can say that it is used to blow air or increase the velocity of treated air. The blower is made up of GI Metals. There are different types of Blower used in HVAC Fields Like, Backward Curve Centrifugal Plug Type blower, Forward curved centrifugal Plug type Blower, Pulley driven blower, etc.

3. Pre-Filter

This is the second layer of filtration in AHU, the first level is the Return riser filter. The purpose of the pre-filter is to filter return air and fresh air, there are different types of filters used in HVAC systems. Like EU 7, EU 13, etc.

4. Fine-Filter

This is the Third Layer of Filters in the AHU system used in HVAC. The purpose of fine filter is to filter treated air, which means air is sucked from the heater section by blower and get pushed through fine filter.

5. Heater

Heater

The heater is an electrical device that is used to convert electrical energy into Heat energy. The heater is an electrical component used to produce heat. The main function the of heater used jn the HVAC system is to remove moisture from the air and also to maintain room temperature.

6. UV Light

UV light means Ultraviolet light. It is used in Ahu to Kill the organic bacterial generated in the lab and comes through the air in AHU.

UV light is an electrical device, which is used to produce ultra violets rays. The main function of this UV light in an HVAC system is to maintain humidity and neutralize harmful particles from the air.

7. BIBO Filter

BIBO filter is a type of HEPA filter, which is used to filter harmful dust particles coming from production areas. These harmful dust particles are very harmful to the environment and also to human beings.

8. Fresh Air Damper

A fresh air damper is a volume control damper. This is also known as fresh air VCD, the main function of a fresh air damper is to control fresh air volume.  

9. Bleed Air Damper

The main function of the bleed air damper is to control extra air from the HVAC cycle

10. Supply Air Damper

The main function of this Supply air damper is to control the total supply air to areas. The function of a return air damper is to control return air volume from the area.

11. Pre and Post Cooling Coil

Cooling Coil

The pre-cooling coil is used to cool fresh air and return air or we can say that it is mixed air, this process is done in ahus to control the humidity of air, this pre-cooling increases moisture content is pre cooling section and then passed to post cooling coil.
